For tourists and commuters passing through New York City's Port Authority Bus Terminal, George Segal's "Commuters" sculpture is not exactly a reassuring sight.

In the middle of the wide-open space of the building's South Wing, three life-sized white plaster figures line up as though they were waiting to
pass through a doorway that leads nowhere.
A clock next to the door frame reads "NEXT DEPARTURE 3:00," but three o'clock never comes for these folks. |

Each carries a small bag or jacket, each looks listless and sad-and it's no wonder, since they have been waiting in the same spot for almost 20 years. |
