"Old Woman in Front of Her Door" by Roger-Bernard

Japanese photographer Manabu Yamanaka's recent series is titled "Gyahtei," a Japanese word which loosely translates to "age." Inspired by the artist's experience caring for very elderly women in Japan, Yamanaka began to forge friendships with these women, and then began to take their portraits.


"Cherry Red" by Roxa Smith

This series of 17 life-size photographs features the naked, unapologetic bodies of Japanese women in their 90s.


"Frail" by Jimmie James and Nuala Clarke

Yamanaka has taken a subject that could be viewed as disrespectful, distasteful or taboo and created empathetic portraits of women whose individual spirits and personalities emerge through the frail flesh and bones of their bodies.
