It's almost impossible not to notice the visual revolution taking place in the once-humble sneaker. Even the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has acknowledged that sneakers now embody a pinnacle of design. The museum's recent exhibition, "Design Afoot," showcased the formal and technological advances that companies like Nike, Adidas, Converse, and New Balance have made in the realm of the athletic shoe.

Today, shoes have to offer not only comfort but high performance and high fashion. So alongside the typical athletic shoe companies are athletic and hybrid shoes by Prada, Tommy Hilfiger, Polo and Ralph Lauren.
