Since 1972, artist James Turrell has been planning to alter an extinct volcano near Flagstaff, Arizona to create one of the world's largest works
of art.
The object is to create tunnels and chambers within the volcano where visitors can view the sky, the sun, the moon and the stars in a new and
concentrated way. The massive project is scheduled for completion this year. |

Turrell's work has always been concerned with light as a substance, rather than as a means to illuminate something else. For an ongoing installation at PS1 Contemporary Art Center in Queens, New York, Turrell opened the ceiling up
to allow viewers to sit in the room and contemplate a slice of the ever-changing sky. |
