We all know 1960s singer Joni Mitchell, but who knew she is also a talented painter? Mitchell has created over 500 original paintings through the years and her paintings have graced her own album covers for decades.

Her first museum retrospective exhibition showed 87 works at the Mendel Art Gallery, a museum in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the town where Mitchell grew up and where her boyfriend and parents still live.

Mitchell paints in many styles: abstract cubist compositions, pop-style portraits of known personalities, and realistic landscapes of her Canadian homeland. Explaining the relationship between her art and her music, Mitchell is quoted in the New York Times as saying, "I sing my sorrow, and I paint my joy."
