John Wesley was born in 1928, but his work could easily be confused with a hip young artist who grew up in the years after Pop Art began to flourish. In fact, his work is often exhibited alongside that of much younger artists, and his first U.S. retrospective took place last year at New York City's ultra-hip PS1 Contemporary Art Center.

Wesley's pastel-colored cartoon-influenced, sometimes erotic images are notoriously difficult to categorize. The complexity of his work is due to his wide range of sources and influences, including Surrealism, cartoons, poster art, and Greek pottery. |
