Video artist Tony Oursler has become known for projecting moving images of faces onto handmade dolls, white spheres, pillows and other household objects.

His cast of tortured characters often seem to stare directly out at the viewer as if to ask for help. One work called Crying is a moving projection of a giant, single tearful eye on a perfect white sphere. The human impulse for empathy seems to be so strong that this sculpture has, on occasion, moved viewers to dab their own eyes! |

Most often, the effect is comic rather than tragic, like when a sideways face appears to have been squished by a mattress that is lying on top of it, and it’s speaking to you! |
