A deaf, self-taught artist who died over 20 years ago at the age of 77, who never learned sign language or how to speak, James Castle is finally getting his due as an artist.

Born in southwestern Idaho, Castle amassed over several decades a gigantic collection of drawings of his rural home and surroundings from unique perspectives, all drawn on scavenged surfaces like lined paper, pages from mail-order catalogues and the insides of cardboard boxes and matchbooks. |
