Graffiti has rarely been considered fine art, but perhaps that's about to change. Last June the auction house Guernsey's staged the first-ever fine art auction devoted entirely to graffiti art, and it included some of the
biggest names in contemporary art.

The auction featured the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and many others. These three artists began their careers making art on the streets, but gradually worked their way into the most respected art
institutions in our culture.

However, most of the other graffiti artists in the auction, known by monikers such as Iz the Wiz, Coco 144 and Wicked
Gary, have never been recognized outside the subculture of graffiti taggers.
