Every city in Europe has seen an Andy Warhol painting pass through its museum doors at one time or another, right? Actually, no. But thanks to the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, important works of America's premiere Pop artist will tour southern and eastern Europe.

The exhibition, Andy Warhol: A Retrospective is one of many special Millennium
programs sponsored by the Department, and has the official support of the White House Council. Organized with the assistance of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA, it travels to twelve countries during the next year, after opening in Almaty, Kazakhstan on January 8, 2000.

Over the course of his life, Warhol created films, prints, drawings,
sculpture, paintings, diaries, audio and video works, and a vast archive of
ephemera. His decision to use popular culture iconography and commercial
reproductive techniques changed the face of contemporary art, and the
public's relationship to it.

His images of Marilyn Monroe, Campbell Soup Cans, Mao Tse-Tung, Mickey Mouse and portraits of famous people have themselves become icons of popular culture.
