Renowned contemporary artist Jeff Koons is something of a professional prankster. One of his series of artworks consists of photographs of himself and his wife, a former porn star, having sex. Another work features a vacuum cleaner mounted in a Plexiglas box. Still another Koons creation is a life-sized ceramic figure of Michael Jackson and his pet monkey, Bubbles.

Despite his preoccupation with what might be called "lowbrow" culture, Koons has earned a distinctly highbrow following, and he is one of the most successful and respected contemporary artists working today.

The Puppy sculpture, a 43-foot replica of a terrier puppy covered in
flowers, is a marvel of engineering. It consists of a metal armature covered
with 25 tons of soil and flowers and features its own internal irrigation
system. Head to paw, Puppy is covered with over 70,000 flowers. Each time
it is moved, it must be disassembled, transported and reassembled over a
period of weeks. It might sound like overkill, but then Jeff Koons has never
been accused of subtlety.

Puppy has been seen at museums throughout the world, but its first
appearance in the United States is sponsored and organized by the Public Art
Fund, in association with Rockefeller Center in New York City. Puppy is currently occupying the honored site where the gigantic Rockefeller Center Christmas tree sits every
December.
