A work on paper, whether a watercolor, pastel, print or
photograph, should be matted and framed to protect the image from the
elements over time.
Many people agonize over the width of a mat’s margins.
The key is to remember that the mat should not overwhelm the image itself;
it should only enhance it.
Margins should be even on all four sides, with
the exception of the bottom, which can be wider to accommodate any signature
or numbering that the artist has placed.
