The ocean is a great source of inspiration for color, light, movement, memory and environment in the work of many artists. In this exhibition, you will find various seascape styles, which can elicit endless types of responses.

Featuring work by Liduine Bekman, Francois Mayemba, Donald Davis, Chester Gage and Karen Rose.
Liduine Bekman

Liduine Bekman’s complex watercolors reveal the intensity and power in sea life. Pink crustacean claws extend into the light from the indigo depths, and interlock with muscles, rocks and kelp. In her panel paintings, layers of material produce a sort-of saltwater mandala. Works created from observation and imagination, Bekman’s paintings, invite you to glimpse an underwater world. Her subject matter focuses on the various and intricate forms of sea life, while rich colors and contrasts remind us of the magnificence of the ocean.

Francois Mayemba

Life on the coast of West Africa is the source of color-drenched miniatures by François Mayemba. Set in his homeland of Congo, Mayemba displays the daily lives of the people living near the ocean. He shows them preparing to fish at sunrise and as political refugees setting sail on the ocean. Despite the difficulties endured, the light reflected upon the waters of the ocean at sunset is a source of brightness and hope. We see life along the ocean’s shore and life at the edge of freedom.

Donald Davis

Donald Davis focuses on recreating the feeling and impressions of coastal environments-focusing on cloud formations where the sky meets the sea. His locations span the globe from Anguila, Florida, Cape Cod, and Washington State. In such paintings as Beach at Sunken Meadow, Davis portrays a sense of the wind, the air and the temperature-we might even expect to hear a seagull in the distance.

Chester Gage

Maine in the summer: a solitary sailboat enters a cove, sunlight bounces off of a pounding surf and cliffs, and time stands still. Chester Gage creates bright paintings that focus on the coast of Maine. Natural forms are as much a part of the subject matter as life along the coast. Gage highlights the textures of rocks, trees, and sea spray along the shore. His work conveys the energy of the coastal environment and the nostalgia associated with it.

Karen Rose

Surrealist Karen Rose creates landscapes of dreams, combining water and architectural elements. Her clean lines and effervescent handling, convey the tranquility of the sea. A feline, peers at the moon, while perched on a cliff overlooking an expansive ocean. Rose portrays the surreal in coastal landscapes. In one image we see a burning sunset and in another, at the same location, we are shown a bright sunny day.

Rose often incorporates design elements from art deco, and colors reflecting her native South Florida. Local flora and fauna can be seen in Birds by the Beach. Despite recognizable components of the artist's process, we find a whimsical reminder of the ocean's presence: A starfish and a koi fish painted as tromp l’oeil.
