Exhibitions come in all shapes and forms, launching the careers of emerging artists, and adding to the fame of established artists. In this week's Art Byte, we look into a benefit exhibition entitled "Night of 1000 Drawings". From funky cartoons to comic watercolors, the hundreds of emerging artists represented here cover all subject matters and mediums, and most artworks are available at under $50.

On the other end of the spectrum, we pick up the latest news regarding the infamous (and very pricey) British artists in the Sensation exhibition. It looks like the controversial show will not be traveling to Australia as originally planned. Read all about it in "Australians have no 'Sensation'".

  Anne Brody
Anne Brody brings a large body of rhythmic, abstract paintings and drawings to PaintingsDircect.com. In her oils on canvas, quick strokes of muted color suggest a regulated method of brushwork. In her drawings, small delicate shapes unfold into organic compositions, reminiscent of landscapes and underwater foliage. Anne Brody spent her earlier years in Japan, where she developed her appreciation for an Asian aesthetic. She studied at The Cooper Union school and the Yale School of Fine Arts, and has had several solo shows in New York City.

  Liduine Bekman
Liduine Bekman's award-winning watercolors of underwater life reveal her life-long fascination with the sea. "The ocean was very much a part of my childhood." She grew up in the Netherlands, a country that she says "was literally built out of the sea." Her lyrical compositions of stone crabs, turtles, and sharks are painted in a vivid palette of bright tropical hues, indicative of her home in Pompano Beach, Florida. Liduine Bekman studied at the Alfred Glassell School of Art and the Berkshire College of Art and Design. Her work was recently purchased by French artist, Christo.

  Frank Caracciolo
Frank Caracciolo's abstract oils on canvas evolve as the work is being created, with each stroke and gesture reacting to the previous mark. Layers and drips of muted color overlap and intertwine and consciously mimic nature. "I am very drawn to aged surfaces…weathered textures that express and seem to capture the passing of time." Frank Caracciolo studied at the School of Visual Arts and has had several solo exhibitions in New York City. His work belongs to corporate collections such as Lexis-Nexis, France Telecom and European Investors..

  Roxa Smith
Roxa Smith's realistic renditions of highly imaginative subjects are playful twists on the history of Latin American surrealism. She uses animal imagery to depict various "aspects of the human condition." She portrays the fluctuating tension in relationships in works like "Flirtation," "Tight Rope" and "Bull". Roxa Smith was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She has been in several Latin American exhibitions at such locations as the Venezuelan Consulate in New York and the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She has also shown her work at galleries in New York City, Panama, and Madrid.

  Robert Axelrod
Robert Axelrod's paintings and etchings are based on impressions of nature in the Catskill Mountains and the coast of Maine. For twenty years, Axelrod has been intrigued by the dense forestry, brooks, and mountain views of these locations. Each piece is done outdoors, where the artist "attempt[s] to interpret the quality of light, season and moods that the region shows in great variety." Robert Axelrod studied at the High School of Music and Art and at New York University. He has had several solo exhibitions in New York.
