Introducing this week's PaintingsDIRECT.com artists.
  Cecily Barth Firestein
Witty collage artist, painter and printmaker Cecily Firestein has added a new series of large-scale paper works to her very popular pages on PaintingsDIRECT. The new works all address the myth of the elephant. Incorporating realism and humor, the artist portrays elephants dancing on the moon, marching beside a bicycling Albert Einstein and donning period costume. Firestein received her MA at New York University, and her work belongs to numerous public collections including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Skirball Museum.

  Nina Kotel
Russian painter Nina Kotel's close-up still lifes of fruits and vegetables possess qualities of intimacy and familiarity. Jars of fruit compote remind us of school lunches, while black mushrooms evoke the history of Russian mushroom hunting. Kotel studied at the Kiev State Art Institute and her work is part of many prestigious art collections, including that of the Grand Duc of Luxembourg and the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation.

  Dan Scher
Dan Scher focuses on the act of seeing in five series of miniature landscape paintings that make up his portfolio on PaintingsDIRECT. The artist paints directly from life, observing his subjects at different times of day. Combining the changing natural light with his changing moods from day to day, Scher creates unique visions of nature using repeating locations from northern Manhattan to Cape Cod.

  Ruth Neubauer
Photographer Ruth Neubauer debuts on PaintingsDIRECT with a portfolio of pictures taken from her travels around the world. Lavender brush in the south of France, trees along the Potomac and a series of doorways are just a few images that have attracted Neubauer's eye. "I am compelled by the mystery that I see in nature, in the work of human beings, and in the relationship between them." Neubauer has exhibited her work in Delaware.
