"My paintings grow out of a layering of water media; many transparent washes form the background. An image is laid down with gesso and then, at times, destroyed in the process of layering washes, various collage materials, caran d’ache crayon or inks. The markings with tools also produce texture. My intentions are to create an artwork that vibrates. There are many ways to do this (color, form, etc.), but layering materials seems to create that vibration for me. The artwork is not finished until it seems whole, and that comes about by applying whatever seems appropriate to each piece. Though each painting begins with an image, it changes as the work progresses. The completed work is often quite different from its original image and has an existence that is hopefully vibrant."
