"I call my paintings 'visual haiku' after the Japanese poetic tradition of observing nature ferociously until substance gives way to spirit. Like haiku, my paintings are meant to represent moments of heightened awareness and existential beauty.

My paintings also reflect an American transcendentalist tradition which believes that any ordinary object, shown with every detail specified, can offer a sudden glimpse of heaven. "

Dorothy Churchill-Johnson, March 2000
"

My latest work is edging toward surrealism. I describe it as Georgia O'Keefe meets Salvatore Dali. I'm pushing beauty to extremes, isolating my subjects in invented abstracted landscapes, toward the realm of virtual reality. The paintings express a dichotomy between joy and desolation, and evoke a sense of being an isolated consciousness in a beautiful universe that is chillingly indifferent to mankind."

Dorothy Churchill-Johnson, March 2002
