"All of these paintings were begun with drawings done from the perceived reality of vintage celluloid. I seek out architectural spaces with dramatic points of view. I amass a big pile of drawings and begin to collage them together. I’m interested in the shifting perspectives that happen when they come together, and how that creates a new reality. The collages are used as starting places to begin the paintings.

I consider my paintings explorations into a ‘sense of place,’ sometimes invented, sometimes observed and sometimes remembered. I’m interested in how light and reflections define, dissolve, and give life and spirit to a place. I layer, scrape away, and draw back into the paint to build and define the architecture. Ideally, the initial layers of paint show through to give evidence of a previous life.

I’m influenced by Wallace Stevens, whose poetry graces the titles of my work. In my paintings, I look for what Stevens would refer to as ‘the storming in the walls.’ When the ‘storming’ is sufficiently strong I consider the painting finished."
