"Painting has become a very simple act for me. I paint while I cook and wash clothes or dishes...it all happens in the sink.

I am an artist with an unusually complicated cultural background, born in England to parents of Dutch and Yugoslavian ancestry. My family emigrated to Brazil when I was three. At the age of 12, I was enrolled in a German boarding school, where I lived and studied for over five years. During that residency, I was steeped in German language, literature and history. I have been living in New York City for the past ten years.

This amalgamation of cultures has always made it difficult to establish a cultural identity for myself. I am European by birth and ancestry and Brazilian by nationality, yet for a significant period of my youth, I was culturally a German. I was triply a foreigner. This created a dissonance in my life that I am still attempting to reconcile today.

My work as a painter is based on this complex multi-national background, and on my extensive travels to countries around the world. My work mixes images from my travels with fantasies and memories of the countries in which I have lived. Often, I will also incorporate into the work, images from films and other aspects of various national popular cultures that have been influential in my life.

I am still investigating contemporary culture, exploring its resonance with the expatriate culture of my youth. As a painter, I try to evoke these memories and fantasies within the context of the contemporary visual landscape of these countries."
