"My realism has always been concerned with mood and the effects of light and shadow. Coming from an abstract tradition, structure, geometry and the traces of process have also been important to me. Painting cityscapes allowed me to explore these concerns.

In the images of the changing Meatpacking district of New York, mood dominates. The overhangs, the architecture and the shadows fascinated me. These paintings are somewhat loosely handled to emphasize the impermanence of the subject.

In the cityscapes painted from the World Trade Center, the vast panoramic view and the changing light and weather conditions presented new challenges. I was also intrigued by the aerial views from my window; the solidity of the architecture contrasting with the movement of traffic."
