George Gomes' career path took him into advertising as an art director for a number of years and eventually into his own film production company through which he directed television commercials for 25 years. Some of his early print work was done for the original Volkswagen beetle campaign in the 1960s. Many early commercials he directed for Alka Seltzer (among them Try it, you'll like it and I can't believe I ate that whole thing) are now in The Smithsonian and a collection of TV spots he directed over the years was the first commercial work to be inducted into The Museum of Television & Radio. He was voted best commercial director of 1980 by The Directors Guild of America.

Speaking of the years filming TV commercials, he said " Almost all of this creative work was a collaborative effort. There were many gifted people involved. Cinematographers, set designers, writers, art directors, wardrobe designers, music people, film editors and of course clients, each passionate about their particular point of view. Compromises, adjustments and changes were generally the order of the day.

Through all of these years, in my private time, when I often turned to painting, I found the purest, uncomplicated and most consistently satisfying form of creative expression. You stretch your own canvas, prime it, choose and edit your subject exactly to your own liking. The best part of all is the process itself. I'm often a bit sorry when I realize a piece has been completed and any more attention might overwork it.

I've always found painting to be a centering sort of influence at every stage in my life. It never changed when a lot of other things did. When I began painting at age 12 that feeling was the same as it remains today. I've been retired for quite a few years now and am enjoying the process full time. It's been said that we all have three careers in our lives. If that's true, the third is certainly a charm for me."
