" Life is beautiful. Paintings portray this beauty to the world around us.
My Russian roots, particularly St. Petersburg tradition of fine art, provided me with a rich cultural heritage. Until the late 1980s, the Russian public was exposed mostly to Baroque, Rococco, classical and neo-classical art.
As a result, my early works were influenced greatly by these styles.
The chronology of my work begins with traditional painting. My paintings are primarily representational. I employ an academic style and the syntax of traditional art, using the time-honored techniques of the academic painters of the Renaissance.
These include Michelangelo's modeling, Tintoretto's quick and masterful brush strokes, DaVinci's delicate work and Tiepolo's foreshortening.
In 1990 I moved to the U.S., where I was exposed to post-modern works, particularly during my two years of study at Harvard. Mark Rotko's translucent colors, Robert Motherwell's "drips" and Brancusy's sculptural shapes inspired my abstract paintings.
I find that viewing the works of prominent artists is, to some degree, like reading a good book. But as someone once said "Since words are finite, there is an economy in them, but images are infinite, an extension of memory and easily expand the intellect."
