"My work is about inquiry. The art-making process becomes the subject matter. Working abstractly and loosely referential allows an intimacy and flexibility to discover and express.
I explore the language of different mediums and materials; how combining paint and pencil on wood, for example, can evoke different qualities of relationship.
Working in series allows exploration of the experience of seeing. In Zen Buddhism there is a phrase called 'beginners mind,' the ability to see things fresh and new, to go beyond preconceptions, conventions, and words and arrive at direct experience.
These drawings and paintings are like meditations--journal entries cultivating the tools of calm concentration in which there is little separation between the object, the seeing, and the drawing. Sometimes I render the moment of this interconnection, sometimes the frustration of separation through the lens of memory and associations.
The layers of working and reworking to tell the story; unlearning, unraveling, scraping, and digging. My intention is to allow the process of mark making to speak for itself.
I invite the viewer, especially those who say they cannot draw or paint, to connect with your unique way of relating, to move beyond the limiting idea of art as the activity of rendering a recognizable image with accuracy. Break down the limiting and oppressive ideas that interfere with discovery and creative ways of seeing and relating to life."
