"I like to paint the immediate world that surrounds me. I paint ordinary scenes and subject matter because that is what is real and substantial to me. I use the formal language of painting to make an image that transcends the ordinariness of these scenes. For example, I enjoy making compositions and arranging shapes in an interesting and sometimes surprising manner. This not only makes for a more interesting image, it makes it possible to communicate an emotion or an idea to the viewer. To this point, I painted a series of paintings on the roof of my studio building; someone who saw them said they looked like Georgio de Chirico painting on the moon. I liked this statement because the viewer was responding to the way in which I painted that bleak, odd environment.

What is important to me in art is quality. I like paintings that have a strong pictorial construction, clear connection between forms, and a high level of craftsmanship."
