"I love to paint en plein air from nature. Watercolor is a medium I am attracted to because of its portability, brilliance of color, transparency in overlaying washes, and its spontaneity. For 13 years before pursuing watercolor I painted on fabric using wax and dyes in the batik method. Watercolor is also a transparent medium where you save your whites, so it was a natural follow up.

My working process involves drawing on location for an hour or more and painting for about four hours. It may be necessary that I return to the same location at approximately the same time of day to finish the work. The last step involves critiquing the work in the studio to complete it.

For me, painting is mainly an intuitive process. The play of light, the atmosphere, and the way light hits the land and its structures triggers a sensation in me that I want to record. And lately, while drawing the figure from the model, I have become interested in putting humans in my paintings of nature. My colors are derived from nature, but I push them to be more vibrant and juxtapose them in combinations that produce effects I want. The real challenge is to make the white of the paper, the fluency of the brush, and the runaway quality of the wet, watery paint all work with my concept. What is recorded is as true an expression of the self as possible."

Mrs Rom has traveled the world extensively. She is also a docent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
