Ivan Gorin was born on October 18, 1925 in a village in Central Russia, in a farmer's family.

During the 2nd World War in 1941-1944 he worked as a lathe-operator at a military plant and simultaneously took classes of painting.

In 1944 - 1945 Ivan fought German troops along one of the deadliest parts of the German-Russian front, in the 2nd Bellorussian Front. He was wounded in combat. For his service he was awarded several military medals.

In 1951 - 1956 he studied Art History in the Department of Art Theory and Criticism of Moscow State University.

In 1956 Ivan Gorin started to work as a restorer of tempera icon paintings and was chief custodian of the Central Art and Restoration Workshop. He became an authority in the field of art restoration. Ivan Gorin led several restorations, including the restoration of Gobelins in the Bolshoi Theatre (1976), icon paintings dated from the 12th century in Mirozhsky Monastery in Pskov, Russia (1976), several art works of the Tretiakov Gallery and the Great Kremlin Palace (1980)in Moscow, Russia.

In 1985 Ivan Gorin was a member of the team restoring Danaya by Rembrandt (1985).

Since 1964, Ivan Gorin has been the Director of the State Research Institute of Restoration, which focuses on the conservation and restoration of art.

Since 1973, he has been elected several times to the Council of Directors of the Paris, France-based International Council of Museums (ICOM), the organization that includes 147 countries.

Ivan Gorin is the author of more than 150 publications in art. His publications have been translated into Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, and many other languages.

Currently lives in Moscow, Russia.
