"Painting is our aeshetic response to what's going on around us at the moment."
Jimmie James and Nuala Clarke
"We began working together as an experiment. It was irritating at first, letting go of areas of paint and control, but it seemed like something worth getting irritated about because the result brought with it a sense of freedom not felt in solitary work. Not only was it fun at times, but we could participate in something unpredictable. We have learned from each other and adapted as a result of this partnership. Even now, after 2 years of consistent work, both of us still retain our individuality within the paintings.
We listen to music while we paint, most recently Cuban music, Ibrahim Ferrer, the Buena Vista Social Club, and Tom Waits. More often we have listened to jazz. People have said that it is an appropriate choice as the way in which we paint together is similar to the way jazz musicians play together. We play and we're not afraid to jump all over each other's stuff in order to get a fresher, newer more exciting painting. What we do is improvisational. We don't discuss with each other what we're about to do. One of us starts and then the other takes over, neither one of us dominates the finished work, but both presences are very evident. I like Theloneus Monk, the way he plays the piano, his irregular rhythm and the way he can take you by surprise. I hope that this work holds some of that surprise and sincerity."
Nuala Clarke, October, 1999
" I like the music of Sherman Irby and Gerald Cannon, for some of their collaborative work together on the sax and bass is true inspiration.
Most of the time we paint outside, around people, traffic, and in all weather. As stressful as this is, it is essential to our work. The friction of the stress can instigate the soul to become more lucid. We continue to work together at the corner of Spring and Greene Streets in New York City's SoHo district."
Jimmie James, October, 1999
"Over the course of a year, Nuala and Jimmie painted, showed, and lectured in towns and cities across America. On the streets and in cafes, galleries, music festivals, and contemporary art centers, their paintings developed a style unique to itself.
Nuala Clarke and Jimmie James bring their respective talents, energies, and vision together to create fresh and important works of collaborative painting. Their spontaneous give-and-take style seamlessly combines two unique sensibilities in each work of art. The result is a breathtaking reinvoragoration of abstract expressionism."
Daniel Kendall, Writer and Teacher, September, 1999
"Paintings by Nuala Clarke and Jimmie James are often entirely abstract, and always richly suggestive. The two artists maintain a nimble balance between crystal clarity and a vivid murk out of which anything you need may come. With lush deep colors and an overlay of child-poet/savant pencil scrawls, these works are beautiful. But they don't stop at your eyes; like all of the best things they are equally resonant in the heart and mind."
