"One of the earliest influences on my work as an artist has been Giovanni Piranesi. Upon seeing his work, I felt an immediate connection with his use of line and space to create a light that emanates from within his pictures.
I work from the concept and feeling of space using drawings and sketches and a meditative process to contemplate the ideas and use of space. The most significant inspirations for my works have been Gothic cathedrals, bridges, and spirals. In my work, I explore the concepts of spirituality, ritual, dance, and battle.
I work by making hundreds of pencil and ink sketches on paper before starting a canvas. Working with line, usually with conte pastel, I explore the feeling of space, drawing, and abstracted figures. Using a pre-selected palette of three to four colors, I plot out the structure of the basic composition. This approach creates for me the question of how to complete the picture. Through trial, experimentation, and intuitive exploration of color, I come to what is a completed picture that leads me to the next piece. I usually paint two to nine paintings in a series, exploring similar ideas with variations to the basic pallet.
My latest series of paintings was most satisfying in resolving the tension created from the abstracted lines of the Elgin Marbles. Using thematic and serial approaches to create an abstracted vision of these ancient sculptures that portray a mythic battle. I am thrilled to have my works exhibited online, and I look forward to being able to share with others as I develop new works during these next years, posting new paintings to the web as they become available."
