"Art is a pragmatic thing; I am a pragmatic thinker. I am interested in the juxtaposition of ideas, forms, colors, and materials that perform to show the complexity of life, the 'layers' that compose all of our personalities and create a oneness of philosophy. Working best by combining images with contrast, I have developed three styles that speak for my artwork and creative spirit.
Painted in oils, my monoprint (or monotype) works are done by applying the medium to glass with brayer or brush, then manipulating the paint to emphasize forms and shapes. Occasionally, I add gold leaf accents or collage unusual materials in thin layers to bring forth an idea. I prefer this method of painting, as it keeps my mind abstract and free of the detail that often clutters a composition. Frequently, I use dramatic color to play out a series of ideas under a larger subject. Currently, I am exploring celestial and organic topics.
The watercolors recently have taken a free-form splash technique that allows me to use my favorite layering of thought and materials. Usually, I go to four or five layers, forging up from the original color, looking for a combination of forms, lines, and contrast for a unique blend, making a startling final rendering. This style allows me to use colored pencil to get the detail I cannot get in the oil monoprints and is another way for me to express the 'surprise' in art, which is often difficult to achieve.
Third, I have begun to use acrylics on large, single sheets of watercolor paper, going in a different direction with each try at the easel. Combining layers of primary and secondary colors in combinations that will bleed into one another with the use of gesso or collage produces many wonderful and colorful compositions.
A fashion illustrator turned art educator 20 years later, with experience as a decorative painter, I have been painting for thirty-five years. Drawing from the experiences of painting in oils and acrylics, experimenting with photography and fibers, and my love of travel and botany, I make work that is as intricate and involved as my life. The complexity and simplicity, the wholeness and oneness, the processes and paths to creativity are what help keep that spirit alive in my artwork."
