"There are always two realms in my art: the world of dreams and the hard world that is not myself. The two languages of sleep and waking, ideas and images interact with one another.

I believe strongly that subject matter in art is the force that drives style. I have concentrated on the human form in my work. My canvases are peopled with characters, both real and of my own invention. The paintings are juxtaposed like collage, or have a more realistic space. There is an implied libretto. They often have a layer of private meaning and provide an invitation to the viewer's imagination.

The figure is usually set in an urban environment. The subjects should be seen in the larger context of dislocation and cultural hybridization. Living in New York City, I am a witness to the arrival of immigrants, and the human panorama of people of diverse cultures going about their daily lives. I have tried to dream their lives."
