"I have been interested in Asia since childhood. Growing up in Seattle, I became familiar with the Asian Art collection of the Seattle Art Museum at a young age. It is a collection that I was to return to throughout my adult life. In college I wrote my senior thesis on Sesshu, one of the greatest Japanese painters, Zen Buddhist philosophy and the artist Morris Graves. After graduating from college, I continued an informal study of Asian art and religion. In 1973 I spent six months in Asia. I visited Buddhist artists and priests. My stay in Kyoto, Japan was especially important to me. I returned to America with a deep connection to Japanese aesthetics and the Zen way of self-discovery. I began painting quick, emotive watercolors having a spiritual and stylistic resemblance to Asian ink and calligraphy. I have also been influenced by American Abstract Expressionism, primarily Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and the Minimalist movement of the 1960's. I paint about universal themes, ordinary human feelings. I paint about life from the heart. The paintings are simple and direct. I like bright, pure colors and strong, simple composition. Lastly, I deeply enjoy painting for the process itself. I go into a space in my mind which is pure energy and joy."
