"There's a continuum through the work of young Brian Leighton. His show 'The Shape of Things' at Chelsea's Gallery 24 in the spring of 1998, gave viewers an unusual perspective of everyday things. For example, a hand might be seen in tight detail from an aerial point of view, but what one could see beyond that would be the less clearly defined form of a nude woman. It's what lies beyond the normal frame of perception which interests him.
Now, in his new show, 'Nymphs' Leighton is back at it again, placing nudes softly out-of-focus in the distance framed by a natural landscape. Leighton purposely shoots his nudes in black and white to emphasize the drama of a story, which he captures in part by altering the viewer's usual perspective of things. Uneven natural lighting plays a big role in the subtle nuances and the path the viewer's eye follows in discerning the various components of drama. Color film, he feels requires lighting far too regular for his purposes."
