"The evolution of my painting style began with large abstract stained canvases. In graduate school I developed this style using many layers of acrylic paint and fabric dye wash, which would bleed into the unsized canvas to create horizons and surfaces involving a transparent depth and luminosity. The lacy edges of color fields were a very important part of each piece.
Many years later, as I was exposed to impressionistic physical settings in France, noticing the light first hand and the textural, almost pointillist surfaces in nature and centuries-old buildings, I began introducing subject matter to my work. Although visually the paintings seemed to have changed drastically, I still used the same technique previously developed.
I interspersed my layers of wash now on primed canvas with the introduction of small brushstrokes of oil paint. Small sections of each canvas, however, could stand as independent abstract work. My style of Impressionism retains the subtle luminosity of my past work, giving the ground a very granular quality, as seen especially in recreated stonework. The impasto oil is very vibrant as it sits on top of the natural ground. The result is a wonderful tension and play between the subtle and the vibrant.
My work continues to evolve with constant new subject matter perceived in different ways and ever-improving changes in technique. The end result is a setting that is not trite, but with a natural visual depth and quality found in my interpretation of a work of fine art."
