"I paint what is in some way meaningful in my own life. A family member, a flower in my garden, or an object in my home have all provided subject matter. Music is important to me and in the current still life paintings I often use a musical instrument that has a personal sentiment or memory attached to it.

I paint in quiet and solitude and I enjoy combining art with poetry. I sometimes write poetry before a painting is started or while it is in progress. This gives me an empathy for the subject and helps me to contemplate and better understand what I want to paint.

For lighting, I prefer strong contrasts and I often take license with the visual truth in the lighting and shadows as well as in the composition.

I like the strength of a quiet painting and the stillness of the poetic flow."
