"My still life paintings in watercolor are considered traditional. However, I draw inspiration from some of the contemporary masters: Dine, DeMuth, O’Keeffe, Rothko, Freckelton, Beal, to name but a few. I have studied Dyne’s work and noted how he selects an object that has meaning to him, uses it in his work, and makes it into an exciting icon. Also, I am drawn to the richness and luminous color in Rothko’s paintings, the use of the diagonal in the exciting compositions of Beal and Freckelton.

In my watercolor still lifes, I choose objects that have a personal association in order to establish a world of memory and tradition. I use objects that have passed from generation to generation, objects that possess the potential for significance because of past associations, objects that may be grand or humble, glistening or tarnished, clear or opaque. I also include things associated with life--flowers, fruit, eggs--solid forms reflecting shifting nuances of color and webs of shadows. Transparent glasses, bowls, or plates and patterned fabrics animate the surface, breathing energy and vigor into the compositions."
