"My work The Ascent of Man, was my unexpected initiation to the art wold. It’s commentary on aging received extensive recognition and was a demonstration of my creative talent. This art poster’s humorous and provocative quality was later expressed in my works on paper, This expression became an authentic art form as dimensional or relief prints on handmade paper.
The first unusual subjects of my relief prints were made from manhole, meter, and valve covers and plates. These hand-pulled prints revealed old foundry designs and metallic effects with detail. I developed the printing and painting as a repetitive process over several years. My eclectic print collection was exhibited at several prominent locations from 1986 to 1991. These early exhibitions included the Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center and two utility companies. My print of a water valve cover depicting the Golden Gate Bridge sparked an exhibition to promote water conservation and won creative, advertising arts awards. One reviewer commented that my relief prints are often humorous, feature unique subjects, and are always fascinating. My father’s positive outlook and humor influenced me to reach people in a positive way. These positive perceptions reflect the spirit of my artwork.
My early prints’ positive use of humor paved the way for further creative work. I realized the significance of using ‘fabricated things’ or common objects, as the means to produce my prints. Common manhole and meter covers, everyday objects, a carved wooden tray, or mundane wall hangings are transformed in the art form. A few laughs, a closer look, and changes in perceptions - these are the assets of my creative work and personal expression."
