"My current subject matter are the flowers of my garden. My floral paintings reflect my love of natural things that are beautiful and pleasing to the eye. The representational image is my bridge of communication to the viewer. My work reflects my personal way of seeing. Responding to nature, my interest is the painting process itself--not the subject matter.
The arrangement of shapes, along with the organization of space and movement into a harmonious composition, rather than the subject matter itself is the primary goal of my work. A balance of weight, space, warm and cool colors, softness and crispness, texture, variety of size and shapes, and contrasts of dark and light values are taken into consideration in the composition.
Art is about content. It presents a point of view, an interpretation and expression that’s unique to the individual arist. It is the why of the painting. It reveals who the artist is. One of the finest compliments that I have received was the statement by a well-known artist to a group of people viewing one of my paintings, ‘Mary paints with her heart, and it shows in her paintings.’ People often miss the beauty around them. I like to help them see it more fully through my paintings.
The viewer is invited to share my way of seeing. My hope is that he or she will enjoy my work."
