"My paintings are landscapes of symbols collected from direct observation of nature, from cherished objects, from specific memories of my childhood in Tasmania--its vegetation, scattered bones, paths, dry heat, and intense color. Images derived from water-divining (which I practice) are constant in my work, weaving through these landscapes. I have developed a symbology of color, which, combined with pattern, rhythm, and repetition, forms the structure for the work"

Garry Nichols, May 2000
