" My painting questions artistic facture and form as carriers of emotional meaning. To investigate this, I reformulate paintings that I had produced within the past decade, made in gestural and intuitive modes, and then I translate elements of these images into highly simplified, flat shapes. By using this systematic process, I evoke a dialogue between painterly and constructive visual language.

My aim is to achieve a 'presence' in the work without a sense of urgency. Toward this end, I manipulate selected shapes by enlarging them, eliminating extraneous detail and visible brushwork, reducing modulated color to uniform planes, and refining the edges to become contour lines at once irregular and sharp. My goal is to monumentalize form into something provocatively ambiguous. I want to depict nature without necessarily showing it.

These effects, I hope, will suggest a slowing of time and a sense of quietude, as if at the edge of stasis. Despite the absence of expressionistic visual drama, and facilitated by the confines of my methodical process, I seek to make work that has emotional weight."
