"Most of these paintings are variations on the theme of self-portraiture and all that this theme entails. Some of the paintings were done from Polaroids that I took of myself; others are from my mirrored image, and some are from imagination. Formal issues and psychological ones are important to me. My process involves an effort to be spontaneous, to allow images to form and then eradicate some, paint some back in until I think the work is saying not only what I wanted it to say, but what it wanted to say. My work deals with issues of the body (my body), and with the constant-or almost constant-awareness of death."
