" The canvases of the 'Miniature Golf Group' were used as drip trays on his studio floor for several months and the biomorphic plywood shapes are leftover cutouts from an earlier group of paintings based on the contours of women's legs. However, each canvas is dominated by the rigid insistence of its stretcher frame, (always the same 'golden' rectangle or square format), which terminates all of the surfaces freewheeling, organic forms at its borders.

Whereas in my drip paintings Minimalism's physicality meets Abstract Expressionist's spirituality, the smaller canvas and plywood panels of Brooke's Miniature Golf Group reference an earlier manifestation of the same dichotomy, that of Constructivism and Surrealism. There is an openness to chance which recalls the Surrealist emphasis on the unconscious over the intentional. The titles of the paintings in the suite are borrowed from the names of the miniature golf courses which dot the landscape of the seaside resort which the artist calls home.

This emphasis on irony and faith has resulted in paintings which I call ironicons. I have a feel for singular, iconic form. I strive for simplicity and universality. With the ironicons, whatever style they take, I am making images which touch both the irony of the gospel which saves me. The stylistic diversity itself is simply another ironic element of work of an artist totally resigned to the certainty and constancy of traditional Christianity."
