I work to find what is beautiful in nature and reconstruct it on a two dimensional surface using color, line, and shape to convey movement and space. I want a composition which has tension and repose, a pleasing tension that will capture a viewer’s interest and hold it. I try to absorb everything around me, responding to the sounds, color, light, atmosphere and geography as I work. Light changes constantly while I’m painting and as this happens, the structure and direction in the picture becomes more important than the landscape itself. In changing light, colors and shapes have altered, but my painting has to remain consistent and clear. Therefore, if what I am seeing has changed, the order (color hierarchy) and rhythmic movement in my painting has to continue developing. I must hold to a dominant idea using what I see in the landscape, picking and choosing elements that are necessary to the painting.
Improvisation is key. I never hold to any system or rule. The only rule is to do whatever makes the painting work.
I start a painting by drawing directly on the surface with a pencil. Working with a rag and thinner I wipe the drawing, redrawing and wiping often, building up light and dark tones. After making a linear and tonal structure, I use color, blocking in the largest overall shapes until the entire surface is covered. I continue building the composition applying paint with brushes or a pallet knife, then scraping away, repainting, scraping again, wiping with a rag, and so on; improvising and defining, thinking, feeling and reacting until the painting seems to come to a rest. It should feel as though it has depth and continuity. I wanted to articulate a believable space which has life and breath."
