| "My interest in still-life painting springs from the potential for narrative suggestions in everyday objects. I keep them small to invite the viewer to examine them closely. The fruits and vegetables have personalities as well as relationships to each other. I often think of them as family portraits. The background text adds another layer to their narrative nature.
Often I find myself drawn to the greater expanse of outdoor space. Each painting in the landscape series starts with the sky as its central theme. After much observation of both the sky and the paintings of it, I came to realize that there are infinite ways to treat the subject. I became determined to explore them. These paintings are based on places I know well, the trees in my neighborhood, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, the Brooklyn Bridge. In the painting of Coney Island, I revisit one of my favorite childhood haunts, which still fascinates me even though it is now decaying and desolate. Through the use of larger scale, I seek to share with the viewer my experience of being in the landscape. My goal is to convey the sense of the actual weather and the historical background of each setting rather than a photographic representation. Passion for painting is the driving force in my life. I love the sensuality and the smell of paint. These paintings reflect my love affair with the use of light, color, composition and technique to create a mood."
