"I paint because it is what I do. I can't imagine not being involved in the making of art. I am fascinated by all aspects of the process - from sketching the nude model to preparing canvases, mixing paint to preparing plates for printing, even the entire process of making hand made paper - which itself is very seductive.
I consider myself to be first and foremost a collagist; almost every painting I do has some element of collage. I work strictly pragmatically; creation is what rules. I go wherever the material, and the feelings they provoke, take me. I 'listen' and 'tune-in' to each piece I'm working on and get inspiration from the materials I surrender myself to.
I love collage materials that I can manipulate. I like to change it's basic form, give it a new interpretation. I don't respond to inflexible material - that can be seen or interpreted one way only, by either me or the viewer. That is why transparent papers and/or paint washes appeal to me - because many layers can be experienced at the same time.
It is not up to me to 'tell' the viewer what to 'see' in my work. I would hope that the viewer relates to each piece in his or her own way, bring to the work a personal meaning. I want everyone to respond to and feel different things, and more, each time they look at a piece. I want my work to be the catalyst, to probe the viewers sensibilities."
