"For the past years I have been using repetition in my work as a way of heightening the impact of an image. Although repeated, the image reappears in distorted or partially hidden forms so that the viewer might imagine new ways to perceive it. I work towards creating an environment for the imagery so that it might become inseparable with the texture and surface of the work.

After graduating from the Royal College of Art in London and returning to America, I became disillusioned with the American and European art world. This feeling was in part due to my growing respect for the aliveness, emotion, and passionate engagement with both content and materials that I saw in Latino, African-American, and outsider artists, such as Pepon Osorio, Luis Cruz Azaceta, Juan Sanchez, Alison Saar, and William Hawkins. Many others were at the fringes of the art world, all but invisible to museum curators. The mainstream Euro-American tradition seemed to be bereft of freshness, spontaneity, and urgency. By comparison, the Western artistic tradition lacked emotional depth. As someone working in that tradition, teaching art as well as working collaboratively with children eventually resolved my dilemma.

For several years, I worked with a young poet, Sean Padilla. I was impressed by his message and the fact that he was only nine years old. As an educator, I am always inspired by the sincerity of children's work. The image became a word, and with it an array of new meanings. Sean wrote poems about world peace and a world free of racism. A child's voice can be the most pure expression of these human concerns. This collaboration set the stage for further interest in children and adolescents as contributors to the professional art world."
