"I grew up on the beaches of Ocean City, New Jersey and have vivid memories of playing on the beach, pretending the jetties were ships and I was the captain. I also remember being fascinated by light and the bright colors of beach towels, umbrellas and chairs mingled with sand and surf. Those memories continue to show up in my paintings. Often people tell me they want to get in my paintings because of the feelings they evoke.

I feel that 90 percent of a painting is in the composition. I am greatly influenced by Richard Diebenkorn, who switched from figurative to abstract art. He uses bold colors and not a lot of detail in faces so that the people in a painting don’t dominate the scene. I would rather the color and the landscape take over rather than the details. I try to capture the moment and the emotion I am feeling as I’m painting, especially when on location. It is sometimes hard to evoke the feeling I want, but so elating to achieve it and get what I am trying so hard to convey."
