"Painting outdoors, painting from life, is my passion. I am fortunate that a National Wildlife Refuge is a five-minute drive from my house, where the slow rotation of seasons, the changing aspects of the landscape is a never-ending source of interest and subject matter. Total absorption in the work is interrupted only by an animal suddenly scampering for cover, the plop of a frog jumping, a birdsong, a flight of ducks across the sky, a cloud moving across the sun. There are also the little surprises, the little delights such as the fragrance of milkweed in bloom, wind rustling the high branches. All this is interwoven with the smell of paint, the feel of brush on canvas, the heady enveloping fumes of turpentine. Surely this must be one of the happiest occupations on Earth. My struggle is to reflect all this in my artwork. "
