"Barbara Zietchick received her B.A. degree from Hunter College, and graduate degrees from Wagner College and Richmond College, Staten Island, New York. She works in an expressionistic style, using bright colors and interrelated shapes to depict memories and impressions of her travels around the world. Her monotypes often depict fantasy animals in imaginative, fanciful poses. She creates flowers, which are colorful and subtle, celebrating their own beauty and individuality. For Barbara, the rich use of color and mood-evoking color relationships are the language of her art.
Barbara is a member of the Westfield Art Association, and she is a Friend and member of the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, Summit, New Jersey and a member of the Printmaking Council of New Jersey, North Branch Station. She is an alumna of the Woodstock School of Art, Woodstock, New York, and has studied printmaking at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Barbara’s slides and background materials are included in the NJ State Council of the Arts Visual Slide Registry.
Monotype is a unique process in which I use a combination of painting and printmaking techniques. They result in a one-of-a-kind image that is developed on a flat plate with oil paints and inks, and then transferred to wet printmaking paper. The transfer is made with a press. The result is a colorful, subtle combination of colors and shadings, which create a unique effect.
I work in the medium of monotype with oils because of its painterly qualities and fascinating effects. There is no other printmaking medium that creates images with so much variety of color, and which allows the brushstrokes to be so evident. It is an adventuresome process because the pressure of the press on the plate results in shading and blending, and the images created are exciting and sometimes surprising. The monotype takes on a life of its own."
